This isn’t going to be the first time when someone has talked about the importance of goals and it definitely won’t be the last.

Putting the clichés aside, understanding the relevance of goal setting is essential to accomplishing great things in the PR world.

Having a goal written down with a set date for completion gives you something to plan and work for. A written goal is an external representation of your inner desires; it is a constant reminder of what you need to accomplish.48599368_l

There are common patterns when it comes to working towards goals: you can set your mind to something, you get enthusiastic and work like mad and then the motivation kicks in. Setting goals that you can focus on helps you connect better with yourself; it gives you the motivation and energy you need to work through periods where your focus inevitably starts to wane.

Goals also help you to believe in yourself and fuel your ambitions; they give you the inspiration necessary to aim for things that you never thought were possible. Are you someone that wants to achieve something that many dream about, but never actually reach? Unless you see yourself making progress, your dreams and aspirations are nothing more than vague notions floating around in your imagination.

There is something exceptionally humbling about revisiting the goal that you set yourself six months to a year ago and, realising that you have done more than you thought you did – this is proof that you are now making changes to get where you want to be.
There can be times where we set goals that don’t reflect what we want. Sometimes we think we need more money, when we just need a change of environment. Sometimes we may think we need more time, but what we really want is work that we can be passionate about.

By asking ourselves what we really want and constantly re-assessing our goals, we can gain the benefit of introspection and self-reflection. We can figure out what it is we really want in life – and then we can go out and get it.

If you take the time to set goals in business, you can ensure that your working life is geared towards getting the most out of every moment. There is so much to do and experience and learn, but many of the things we want to achieve won’t be handed to us – we need to work for it but first we need to know what it is that we are working for and set goals to make that possible.
